Please note that a considerable amount of the regulatory information on the Hazardous Waste Portal refers to federal regulations. In many cases, states or local governments have promulgated relevant rules and standards that are different and/or more stringent than the federal regulations. Therefore, to assure full compliance, you should investigate and comply with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. Further, state specific guidance from another state that you are not doing business in may not apply to you - check with your state environmental agency for complete and accurate information.

Hazardous Waste Generator Resources for Homeowners and Private Citizens

Homeowners and private citizens are not subject to the same hazardous waste regulations as businesses. However, households often generate hazardous wastes in significant volumes that would be regulated, if they were a business (for more information, see the EPA page on common household hazardous wastes). To prevent injury and environmental damage from such wastes, most states and municipalities/counties impose rules on homeowners and private citizens with regard to the types of wastes that can be disposed of in trash receptacles and at convenience centers or landfills.
